Sometimes the world sucks. Sometimes bad things happen. Sometimes so many bad things happen that I wonder where the good is anymore.
Those moments can last a lifetime. Those moments where things seem so dark and heavy.
I’m sitting worrying about our finances, and someone I know points out I should be thankful because we have so much more than so many others. I just don’t get it, that person says of me.
Tomorrow, I’m the lucky winner of an Echo and a cardiac stress test appointment. The heart palpitations I’ve been having aren’t thyroid related. So I get to go find out if my heart’s the problem. A part of me is worried. But someone pointed out that I had such an easy time with cancer I should be grateful even if it is my heart because so many people have it worse.
Then I begin to feel guilty for wanting to feed my family healthy food and wanting to be able to run with my children and our great giant dog. I feel guilty because I want the world, my world, to be amazing.
Luckily those moments don’t last long for me.
Yes, some people have it worse, a lot worse. Some of life is a twist of fate that put me where I was born and where I grew up, but a lot of it was me and my choices to. Yes, I own the choices that made money a little tight at times, but I also get to own the choices that allowed us to get to where we are now.
There was a horrible massacre in Kenya recently, and there was the shooting in Orlando. Both are horrible, my posting about Orlando does not mean I don’t care about Kenya or the people there.
Life is not made up of absolutes.
It is possible to have some money, and also not be able to do everything you’d like. It’s possible to have some health problems and not others. It’s possible to care about people in more than one part of the world.
But do you know what else is possible? It’s possible to be better and do better!
All of these problems, and so many more, can be fixed with a little more love, kindness, and compassion for our fellow humans. Tomorrow when someone doesn’t hold the door for you, or cuts you off, or does anything else that you’d normally take offence to, I ask you to take a moment and see it from their perspective.
There are so many reasons why any of those things could happen.
Tomorrow spread kindness and empathy. Tomorrow make the world better, even if it’s just one person’s world. Tomorrow let’s outshine the darkness. Tomorrow lets turn our eyes to the sun.
